Full manual photography is hard (, yo!).
I love these wheels. Prefer the design of the old R8 though.
It forces you to take more time to frame your shots, set the aperture, ISO, shutter speed, zoom and focus to get a good photo. My lack of experience meant I was often forgetting one or more of those settings when shooting and re-doing several shots (when I noticed). Autofocus and image stabilization have definitely spoiled me. It’s a challenge but that’s half the fun in photography with these old lenses.
Yellow is not a good colour on the new GT, IMO.
This issue was exacerbated by the fact that I brought the wrong lens and should have used my 28mm f2.8. The 35-105mm f3.5 I brought seems like it would give me a good focal range to go from full car shots to detailed close ups.
I need dis.
In practice however, the fact that I’m using this 35mm film lens on a crop sensor meant I was working with an effective focal length of 52.5-157.5mm, which was too much zoom in a cramped auto show environment. When I wanted to shoot a car I had to be zoomed all the way out at the 35mm length and even then stand more than 3m (10') back from the subject to get the whole car in frame.
Renault Sport Spider. Underexposed, sorry.
With a healthy crowd in attendance, this requirement made it difficult to keep people from walking through the shot. As I try not to impose on others I let this limit the number of cars I actually tried to get completely in frame and instead reverted to my usual game of sitting in all the things.
So minty. 5000km on it, IIRC.
Speaking of which, 6'5" me fits in the back seat of a BMW i8... sort of. Getting in wasn’t too bad but my exit was less than graceful, much to the amusement of spectators I’m sure.
This Jaaaag was a manual. This pleases me.
Also, I fit in the new Miata. Being a lanky fucker, this is a pleasant surprise, especially considering I did not fit in the NC (knees pretty much stuck between the steering wheel and door/dash respectively on the left/right). I suspect I have Mazda’s renewed focus on light weight to thank for this; what seem like more minimal doors and dash and thinner seats all afford space for the driver. Well played Mazda, well played, you may expect me for a test drive when the nice weather returns.
Now for some of what the 35-105mm is good for - detail shots.
This little excursion was actually on Wednesday but I didn’t have the time to go through the photos and finish up my post until this morning.

I love it! I’ve been shooting more and more fully manual. My two current favorite lenses are manual focus and I always shoot manual aperture and shutter speed anyway. But finding the focus is a fun challenge, doesn’t always work.

Shoot in RAW too... This Renault Spider pic is easily corrected in photoshop. I personally shoot in full manual all the time, but use autofocus simply because unless I’m shooting in complete dark, the camera is better than me to determine how focused I am... (unless of course I’m doing some portrait shot in F1.4 but still...)

These were shot in RAW actually. Not sure I have the software and definitely not the know-how to adjust it properly though.

Which auto show was this? I would die to see a Renault Sport Spider.
Love the Hellcat badge shot.

Today I learned that DasWauto is loaded.
Hellcats, GTs, Full on race cars, and an old caravan just to mix things up? Goddamn. I had no idea oppo moderating paid that well. Wish I had the money to burn on a new R8 I don’t like all that much anyway.

Back in the day (I’ve been saying that more + more lately-I must be getting old.) I used to shoot a lot of car pics. Mainly at the local dragstrip. Print them up— b+w 8x10's and sell them to the drivers. My old Honeywell Pentax didn’t even have a light meter. And my 200mm zoom lens probably weighed 5 lbs! Trying to pan-get lighting right-clicking at the right time... and you never knew if you got it right until you printed it up. And “photoshop” had to be done in the darkroom. I don’t have many pics scanned- but heres one where I starting experimenting panning + slowing the shutter speed to blur the background.

While I don’t photoshop (don’t have the software, too lazy), I have to respect people who did this on film back then and did it well. Impressive shot, mine would be a complete blur and I’d have somehow managed to focus on the grass. :)

I was there on Wednesday as well! Would have been nice to discuss some cars with a Jalop. Agree that yellow is weird on the GT.

Sent the Spider. Couldn’t put the Viper in the same email because of the max attachment size limit so I’ll send another.
The Viper suffers from an issue that most of my images from that that did, too shallow of a depth of field, I should have used a smaller aperture to put more of the car in focus. A lesson for next time.

Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto. Today is the last day of the show so you can still see it if you happen to be in Southern Ontario.

I’ll have to go next year.

Tuck your elbows in — up against your rib cage. Hold the lens from the bottom, and depress the shutter right as you finish exhaling. Also, don’t stand with your feet perfectly in line with your shoulders. Have one a little forward, and one a little back.
That said, it doesn’t look like you had all that much trouble shooting after all. Nice shots. :)
Are you already an author on Photography? If not, would you like to be?

I’m a dinosaur, so its all I knew for at least 20 yrs. Still have 2 old manual 35mm that usually gather dust in a closet. I occasionally burn a roll of film through the Spotmatic II with Super-Takumar 50mm 1.4f.

Unfortunately that isn’t really possible with the old 35mm film lenses I’m using. Aperture, zoom and focus are all manual as required by the lenses. ISO and shutter speed the camera might be able to figure out but I had it in full manual since I had to do the rest anyway. The benefit is that these lenses cost but a fraction of their modern equivalents.

So how do you like that? The magic of photoshop lol.Only made the pictures clearer, added contrast, more exposure on darks for the spider, lowered the exposure a bit for the viper and made the colors “pop out” a bit more. Took about 20s of work for each picture :)
Sending you the full res to your email...

Impressive. I might have to get myself a copy of photoshop and/or lightroom and learn some of this magic. Much appreciated.
Also, I need to get a polarizer filter for my lenses. Too much glare and reflections.

They are available through “less legal” manners if you want too ;)
And indeed a polarizer would help
